Observe and Serve

Observe and Serve

The kids and I decided this week was an important time to do something special for Grandpa and Grandma.

You see, Grandpa has worked at the same place for over 30 years, and has always loved his job until recently. The last 5 years have brought changes to their plant that would be tough for anyone to endure, but Grandpa has done what was expected of him, trying in all things to glorify God. In the last year or so, he has been working 12 hours a day, at least 5 days a week, leaving him completely exhausted. Grandpa found out this week that he gets NO THANKSGIVING holiday. He’ll be working Monday through Saturday 7 to 7. I can only imagine how tough it was to come home today, take a shower, eat a quick bite and go to bed, just to have to get up and do the same thing tomorrow morning, as if the holiday didn’t exist. And imagine Grandma at home all day by herself on Thanksgiving!

So, the kids and I made cards for them. We also packaged some treats, including cookies that Miranda made over the weekend. On Monday, we stuffed it all into a small flat-rate priority mail box from USPS and sent it for $5. A small price to pay for the joy in their hearts when they opened a mini care package from the grandkids! (I had to wait to post this until I knew they had received it. Didn’t want to give away the surprise!)

Serving is simply noticing a need, and doing what you can to meet it!

What kinds of things have you or the kids done recently to help others?

  1. Hmmm…someone with a crummier job than Andy. You’ve given me perspective. Your poor parents! It must have been so special for them to know you remembered them.
